Week 16 Picks - Excellence in low pressure

Wait, Week 16? How is that possible?

It seems like just yesterday we were wondering how the Packers would cope with Jordan Love’s knee injury, which for a while looked like it might derail his whole season. Then, in the blink of an eye, nearly a whole season has flown by, and now we’re here in Week 16 playing out the string until the “real” season starts. Or maybe starts again.

I don’t like the idea of playing out the string, but when you’re in the position the Packers find themselves, it’s hard to portray it any other way. They’ve got their job to do, but even as they play for positioning (and, technically, a playoff spot, still), the reality is that these games have a lower level of meaning than the ones the Packers will be playing in just a couple of weeks.

I think this is one of the biggest challenges a coach and team could face. The Packers’ game this week is still important. It still matters. The Packers still need to win. But it’s just…not the same as playoff football. How do you maintain the focus you need to play your best? How do you motivate yourself against an opponent you shouldn’t just beat, but should beat badly?
