Rumor: Packers to Interview Saints' Pete Carmichael and Dan Campbell
The Packers will meet with a pair of offensive assistants from the New Orleans Saints, as first reported by CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.
Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael will meet with the Packers, likely on Saturday when Green Bay executives are scheduled to meet with associate head coach Dan Campbell.
Green Bay’s coaching staff and front office have few connections to the 47-year-old Carmichael. The closest tie we found in our analysis on Carmichael was that he coached former backup quarterback Doug Pederson in Cleveland as a Browns offensive assistant.
Despite eight teams looking for a new head coach, this report is the first time Carmichael has been publicly connected to an opportunity. Because much of the hiring process is done through backchannels, little public interest does not necessarily mean he’s not in demand as a coach. As it stands, he is the longest-tenured offensive coordinator in the NFL – he was promoted to the position in 2009 by head coach Sean Payton.
Carmichael currently ranks as the fourth most-liked among NFL offensive assistants according to polls on The Power Sweep’s Twitter account, behind New England’s Josh McDaniels, Kansas City’s Eric Bieniemy, and Tennessee’s Matt LaFleur. As of now, Bieniemy is the only one who has yet to have scheduled an interview with the Packers.
Campbell was on Packers interim head coach Joe Philbin’s staff when he was the head coach in Miami. Philbin was fired in the beginning of his fourth season with the Dolphins, and Campbell served as the interim head coach. After Josh McDaniels decided against coaching the Colts, Campbell was reportedly the runner-up to Frank Reich.
