Packers 2017 Recap: K Mason Crosby

Heading into 2017, there was nothing left for Mason Crosby to achieve. He became the Packers’ all-time leading scorer during the 2014 season and figured to have nothing but smooth sailing and job security ahead until he decided it to call it a career.

Then, like everyone else in Green Bay, his season was upended by a single tackle in Minnesota, leading to decreased opportunities and a year of frustration for one of the longest-tenured players on the roster.

2017 Stats

  • Appeared in 16 games
  • Made 15 of 19 field goals (78.9%) and 33 of 35 PATs (94.3%)

What we said after last season

Packers 2016 Recap: K Mason Crosby – After his nightmare season in 2012, Mason Crosby has been nothing but solid for the Packers, and 2016 continued that trend. His 86.7% conversion rate on kicks this season ranked tenth in the league, jumping to eighth if you exclude kickers who didn’t complete a full season.

Analysis: Crosby avoids most blame for career lows in 2017

Mason Crosby posted career lows in both field goals attempted (19) and made (15) in 2017, but it’s virtually impossible to place any kind of blame squarely on the Packers’ kicker for his dismal 2017 performance.

The Packers gave Crosby a new holder in Justin Vogel and shuffled through three different long snappers before finally settling on a consistent group. That Crosby struggled was barely a surprise.

Even Crosby’s most high profile miss of the season can barely be attributed to him. With the Packers clinging to a 21-14 lead late in the third quarter in a brewing upset in Pittsburgh, head coach Mike McCarthy sent Crosby out to attempt a 57-yard field goal. No kicker had, to that point, ever made a field goal of more than 53-yards in Pittsburgh’s stadium, and when Crosby predictably missed, the Steelers drove down the short field and tied the game.

The Packers would go on to lose by just three points, perhaps a fitting reminder of McCarthy’s mistimed gamble.
