Analysis: Tretter’s injuries finally add up to an exit

Mike McCarthy’s favorite coaching saying has to be some variation of “the best ability is availability,” and for all of his merits, JC Tretter too often has not been able to satisfy his coach’s top requirement.

Entering the season as the starting center, Tretter performed quite well over the first seven games, earning praise as one of the league’s top players at his position.

Unfortunately, seven games were all Tretter was able to contribute, as a knee injury shelved him for the season’s second half.

As good as he was during the seven games he did play in 2016, Tretter’s injury history had to be a significant factor in the Packers’ decision to decline to match Cleveland’s offer to the fifth year lineman.

Tretter finishes his time in Green Bay having played just 31 of 64 possible regular season games.
